Tension at RIMS after patient’s death allegedly due to medical negligence

Tension gripped the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, once more after the death of a patient allegedly due to medical negligence by a doctor on duty. The deceased has been identified as Yengkhom Kesho, 50, of Sekta Village under Lamlai Police Station.
Reports said Kesho was admitted to RIMS but passed away after what family members and attendants alleged to be negligence and lack of timely medical attention. Following the incident, angry relatives and local supporters thronged the hospital, confronting staff and demanding accountability. A large crowd also gathered at the premises, heightening tension in and around the hospital.
This comes close on the heels of another recent case in which a woman lost her life at RIMS under similar circumstances, sparking outrage over alleged lapses in patient care. Civil society organisations and meira paibi groups had earlier raised concerns over repeated complaints of medical negligence at the premier health institute.
The aggrieved family has demanded strict action against the doctor concerned and immediate intervention by authorities to prevent such incidents in the future. Security has been tightened in the hospital complex to prevent further escalation.
