Talk on Prime Numbers inspires students at Canchipur

A Talk-cum-Interactive Programme on the theme “The World of Prime Numbers” was held yesterday at Imphal Public Higher Secondary School (IPS), Canchipur, jointly organised by the National Research Centre (NRC) and the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF). The programme aimed at instilling scientific temper and nurturing a love for Mathematics among young minds.
Prof. Shanta Laishram of the Theoretical Statistics & Mathematics Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, New Delhi, delivered the keynote address. Highlighting the significance of prime numbers, he noted that they are not only the building blocks of mathematics but also central to modern applications in cryptography, artificial intelligence, quantum physics, and even biology. He stressed that prime numbers safeguard online banking and digital communication systems through unbreakable codes.
Prof. Shanta also shared his experiences of leading the Indian Mathematical Olympiad Team in Australia, where students outperformed artificial intelligence by solving all six Olympiad questions while AI could answer only five. “AI lacks the power of human thinking, and this is where human ingenuity still outshines machines,” he remarked. He further drew attention to the ongoing multi-million-dollar global endeavour to discover large prime numbers, underscoring their scientific value.
During the interactive session, students raised questions on learning strategies, career options in mathematics, and the absence of a Nobel Prize in the subject. Prof. Shanta explained that Alfred Nobel himself had not recognised the importance of mathematics while instituting the prize.
Th. Ajit, President of NRC, encouraged students to pursue mathematics with dedication and contribute as future scientists. MSF Vice-President Yumnam James reflected on the declining interest of youths in the subject, while IPS founder Asem Kennedy urged students to study with discipline and patriotism, quoting John F. Kennedy’s call to serve the nation.
