Students march to Raj Bhawan; Thangapat residents protest festival

Students of CC Higher Secondary School marched towards Raj Bhawan today, attempting to reach the Governor’s residence in protest against what they allege was the use of excessive force by security force on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at Dolaithabi yesterday when they tried to return to their homes.
Security forces intervened and drove the students back, pushing them as far as the Veterinary Office gate in Imphal East.
Following a tense standoff, a few representatives from the student group were permitted to enter Raj Bhawan to convey their grievances to the Governor.
The demonstrators carried placards denouncing the alleged brutality against displaced families, describing the action as unacceptable, especially at a time when the PR Government is promoting the Sangai Festival 2025.
In a separate development, residents of Thangapat Mapal in Imphal East staged a protest opposing the government’s decision to organise the traditional Hiyang Tanaba (boat race) at Thangapat as part of the Sangai Festival 2025.
Placard-bearing protesters chanted slogans, stating that the lake should not be turned into a festival venue while the state continues to face a severe humanitarian crisis.
The residents reaffirmed their backing for the ongoing boycott of the festival, accusing the authorities of focusing on celebration and public display instead of addressing the immediate needs of displaced families.
