A large number of students today gherao the administrative block of the Manipur University, protesting the serving of show cause notice to Assistant Professor of the University Dr. N Sanatomba for his speech against the legalisation of liquor by the state government.
The students dismantle the room of Registrar of the Manipur University demanding revocation of the show cause notice.
Talking to Imphal Times, a University authority said that serving show cause notice to Dr. N. Sanatomba is against the rules of the University as there is no compliant against his speech and the Dean Committee cannot discuss such a legal matter as the Committee itself is unconstitutional.
The University source further said that there is no provision for serving the show cause notice in the Manipur University Act. This committee has just been created to facilitate the VC in functioning to serve as an informal advisory group, the source said.
A student in state of anonymity said that being critical of the government and government policies by a university faculty is always expected and is never a crime. The autonomy of the university should not be so easily compromised for personal gains.
