Street vendors protest by selling vegetables inside IMC complex

Large number of street vendors today thronged to the office premises of the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) and sales their goods protesting failure to provide them space at the temporary Market shed at Khwairamband Keithel area.
According to a notification by the Imphal Municipal Corporation issued on October 16, street vendors and other unauthorized persons had been banned to squat or carry on business on public places, roads, street, drains and other open spaces in and around Khwairamband Bazaar. They were however be allowed to squat only in the Temporary Market at the specified enclosures in two different shifts on Morning (from 6.00 am to 12 pm and Evening 1 pm to 7 pm on daily “First come First Basis”.
However, the said temporary market shed had been permanently occupied by some and they never follow the notification of the IMC. Following that members of the six different street vendors’ body today thronged inside the premises of the IMC and staged protest with placards demanding their space for selling goods. Some street vendors also started selling their vegetable inside the IMC complex as a mark of protest.
A protestor told media persons that they were denied their rights of selling goods in the Khwairamband Keithel as some are not following the notice of the IMC.
The street vendors’ bodies stage protest are Khwairamband Keithel Street Vendors’ Welfare Union, Khwairamban Bazar Women Street Vendors’ Union , Joint Coordinating Committee of Registered Street Vendors Union, Young Women Street Vendors Association, Ima Leisana Women Street Vendors Welfare Union and Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh.
