State pays homage to the brave mothers of Nupi Lan; Dialogue only way to resolve issues: CM

Imphal, Dec. 12: The state today observed the historic event when the womenfolk of Manipur rose against the oppressive and unconcerned attitude of the British authority as ‘Nupi Lan Numit’- the Manipur Women’s Agitation of 1939 at Nupi Lan Memorial Complex.
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi and his deputy Gaikhangam graced the function as Chief Guest and President respectively.
The heads of state paid homage to the brave mothers who took part in the agitation by offering floral tributes to the departed souls. Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister stressed the need to listen to and tolerate the opinions of others while stating that everybody has the right to voice our concerns and grievances to the authorities in a peaceful and democratic manner, and such grievances can only be resolved through dialogues and discussions instead of indulging in spreading hatred and apprehension amongst the public which will always prove futile.
Recalling the historic events of 1904 and 1939 when the fearless womenfolk of the state rose against the oppressive british rulers, Deputy CM Gaikhangam extolled the vital role of women in every sphere of the society- from arts and culture, trade and commerce to politics and administration.
He further stressed the unique role being played by the women of Manipur in managing and running the household which will be impossible for women from other part of the country to imitate.
He further expressed the belief that the real form of respect to the brave mothers will be paid when the women in the state can follow in their footsteps. a play- ‘Nupilan’ was also presented by artists of Nupilan Memorial Association and Nupilan and Khongjom War Memorial society as part of the function. Minsters, MLAs, state officials also attended the ceremony.
