State Observes World AIDS Day

As observe in other parts of the World state government today observe World AIDS Day at 1st MR parade ground today. Speaking on the occasion Chief Minister Okram Ibobi said that understanding HIV and AIDS through public awareness is the key to prevent it. He said even though the number HIV and AIDS related cases has been reported reduced it is still in alarming situation.  Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh also cautioned the NGOs working in the field of HIV and AIDS saying that those NGO found to misappropriate the fund for spreading awareness to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS will be deal with stern action. He said that if the dreaded virus continues to spread among the youth of the state then the there is no possibility of producing more sports person in the region. He called upon the people of the state to work together to eradicate the spread of HIV and AIDS in the state.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Phungzathang Tonsing who presided over the World AIDS Day observance said that the virus which used to spread among the injecting drug users has now been spreading sexual intercourse. He said in the last 10 years number of HIV and AIDS cases reported were women and children. He appealed the people to co-operate with the work being taken up by the Manipur State AIDS Control Society to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS.
On the occasion the Chief Minister released HIV Sentinel Surveillance Bulletin 2011 and CSIS Bulletin 2012. The Chief Minister also launched the Prevention of Parent to Child Transmission (PPCT).
