The 15th Indian Organ Donation Day was observed in Manipur under the nationwide campaign “Angdaan – Jeevan Sanjeevani Abhiyaan” at Hotel Imolesh, Old Lambulane. The programme was jointly organised by the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) and the Directorate of Health Services, Manipur.
Director of Health Services, Government of Manipur, Dr. Chambo Gonmei attended the event as chief guest, along with Additional Director Dr. N. Bino, State Nodal Officer Dr. Bikram Khoisnam, Dr. Kh. Lokeshwor of the National Programme for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment, Medical Superintendent of JNIMS, and Consultant Dr. Meena Seram from DHS. Successful transplant recipients were also honoured during the event.
Dr. Gonmei, in his address, said organ donation is one of the noblest acts that can save multiple lives and called for public participation in the life-saving initiative. He recalled that organ transplant pioneer Dr. Thomas Starzl had proven how life-changing this act can be.
He emphasized that many individuals, especially those who lose their lives in accidents, can still contribute to saving others by donating usable organs. With 185 kidney transplants performed in the state so far—123 in women and 54 in men—he encouraged more public engagement and awareness.
He also urged people to consider eye donation, highlighting how it can restore vision and offer a second chance at life. The observance aimed to inspire communities across the state to pledge their support for organ donation and build a healthier, compassionate society.
