Imphal, Jan 12:
Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is set to launch from a private ground in Khongjom, Thoubal district, Manipur on January 14.
President of the Indian National Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge, will flag off the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra at a private ground located opposite the Khongjom War Memorial Complex in Thoubal district, about 35 km from Imphal, on January 14, said MPCC president K. Meghachandra while speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan in Imphal this morning.
Earlier, the MPCC had planned to launch the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from Hapta Kangjeibung in Imphal East district, but due to restrictions imposed by the state government on public gatherings, the MPCC changed the venue to Khongjom in Thoubal district.
“Permission was sought to begin the yatra from the Hapta Kangjeibung ground in Imphal, but the state government gave the go-ahead with certain conditions, which forced us to change the venue at the last moment,” Meghachandra told media persons.
The MPCC had requested permission on January 2 to use the Hapta Kangjeibung public ground in Imphal East district for flagging off the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra on January 14. After waiting for over a week for permission, the MPCC president, along with other Congress leaders, met Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi in the presence of DGP Rajiv Singh, the deputy commissioner (DC), and SP of Imphal East to discuss the matter. On January 10, the MPCC team also met Chief Minister N. Biren Singh regarding the matter, but permission was not immediately granted. Later that night, an order was issued granting permission for the Hapta Kangjeibung ground, but with a limited number of participants. This led the MPCC to choose a private ground in Khongjom, Thoubal district.
“We were told that no more than 1,000 people would be allowed at the venue. As permission was not given, we were in a difficult situation. Late on Thursday night, Thoubal DC gave permission for flagging off the Yatra from a private land in the Khongjom area of the district,” he said.
I.N.D.I.A Block and nine opposition political parties in Manipur have extended their full support to Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay.
After beginning in Manipur on January 14, the Yatra will culminate in Mumbai on March 20. It is scheduled to cover 6,713 km in 67 days, passing through 110 districts in 15 states.
