In connection with the death of three minor girls from drowning at Khoijumantabi under Kumbi Assembly Constituency, a team comprising officials from SDO, Moirang; volunteers of Friend of Farmer along with social worker, Bobbyjames Wahengbam conducted a spot enquiry on Tuesday.
During the enquiry members of the aggrieved family reported that the incident happen when two sisters namely Haobam Thoibi Chanu (11) and Haobam Tonsana (9) d/o Haobam Newton of Khoijumantabi tried to save their cousin sister Haobam Thajamanbi (12) d/o Haobam Ibomcha from drowning on September 21 noon.
Haobam Newton, father of Haobam Thoibi and Haobam Tonsana told the team that due to the recent flash flood that largely affected the surrounding areas a large quantity of sand and mud were accumulated at the area. The two sisters felt into pond while trying to save their drowning cousin sister, Thajamanbi who slipped into water due to slippery muddy soil which were deposited by flood water.
He (Newton) also said that the unfortunate could have been averted if the authority took measure to clean the sediments which were brought by flood water in and around the village.
Still many villagers at Khoijumantabi and surrounding villages are facing various problems as an impact of the flood. Many houses were destroyed and flood residue materials are still deposited inside the dwelling houses, said Bobby James.
The government is responsible for the death of the three minor girls as it failed to take measure to control post flood effect in the flood affected area.
While, assistant secretary of Friend of Farmer, Loitongbam Binot demanded the concerned authority to pay proper compensations to the family members of the three minors.
