Speculation over Kuki-Zo BJP MLAs’ meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah remains unfounded

Speculation regarding a potential meeting between the seven BJP MLAs from the Kuki-Zo community and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, amid rumours of forming a new government in Manipur before the completion of one year of President’s Rule, appears increasingly unlikely, according to sources close to Imphal Times.
Sources said Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Dibrugarh, Assam, today at around 9 pm and will be fully occupied with meetings of various BJP karyakartas from the district. After Dibrugarh, he will travel to Guwahati, where he is slated to hold multiple discussions concerning preparations for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections. These engagements leave no time in his schedule for consultations with the Kuki-Zo MLAs from Manipur.
The absence of any official meeting schedule has fueled expert assessments that the possibility of forming a rival government in Manipur at this stage is highly improbable. Political observers note that the Central government appears focused on maintaining President’s Rule in the state, which could be extended for another two years, with further extensions possible under directives from the Election Commission of India, if the prevailing administrative and security conditions demand it.
The source further clarified that the Kuki-Zo MLAs’ alleged demand for a separate administration from the Manipur government is unlikely to move forward at this time. Analysts suggest that such demands, though periodically raised, face practical and political constraints, particularly in light of the Centre’s current approach to governance in the state.
The speculation regarding the MLAs’ meeting had raised expectations among certain quarters about early political realignment in Manipur. However, the confirmed schedule of the Union Home Minister, coupled with ongoing administrative considerations, signals that any move toward government formation remains off the table.
This development underscores the broader political context in Manipur, where the continuation of President’s Rule, following disruptions in governance and security challenges, appears to be the preferred course of action. While local political dynamics remain closely watched, the likelihood of a sudden shift in power seems minimal in the immediate future.
