In a focused effort to strengthen geriatric healthcare services, the District Administration of Pherzawl has launched a Special Cataract Detection and Surgery Camp for senior citizens at District Hospital, Churachandpur, under the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana.
The surgical camp, which commenced today, will continue on February 20 and 21. A total of 37 elderly persons were identified as eligible for free cataract surgery following screening programmes conducted from January 22 to 24 in Senvon, Parbung and Pherzawl. Of them, 30 consented to undergo the procedure.
The initiative is being implemented by the Department of Social Welfare in collaboration with the District Health Society, Pherzawl, and the National Programme for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment, Churachandpur, along with the Medical Superintendent of District Hospital, Churachandpur.
All beneficiaries are being provided free surgical procedures, intraocular lenses, medicines, post-operative care and incentives. Six elderly patients were also given free spectacles. Comprehensive pre-surgical investigations, including HIV, Hepatitis B and C screening, RCB and blood grouping, were conducted to ensure patient safety. Authorities arranged transport and logistical support to facilitate participation of patients from remote and underserved areas.
Deputy Commissioner Mannuamching, Additional Deputy Commissioner and in-charge District Social Welfare Officer Joel G. Haokip, and Dr. H. Ginthianmung, Nodal Officer of the National Programme for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment, attended the inaugural session and interacted with beneficiaries.
Officials stated that the special drive reflects the district administration’s commitment to accessible and inclusive healthcare for senior citizens.
