Superintendent of Police, Kakching District, Priyadarshini Laishram, IPS, planted a sapling of Uningthou, the state tree of Manipur, during a tree plantation and adoption programme held at Kakching Makha High School Ground on Saturday.
During the programme, it was announced that the Uningthou sapling planted by the SP would be adopted and cared for by social and environmental activist Surjit Kshetrimayum, Secretary of ADAM and a resident of the locality. As part of the ongoing Tree Adoption Campaign, Surjit Kshetrimayum also presented an Uningthou sapling to the SP, encouraging her to adopt and nurture a tree.
Speaking on the occasion, Priyadarshini Laishram assured full support from Kakching District Police to ADAM’s “U-wa Tharasi, U-wa Hinghallasi” campaign. She also called upon people from all walks of life to contribute towards addressing environmental challenges and promoting ecological conservation.
Protective fencing was also erected around the saplings planted at the ground on June 8 to ensure their protection and healthy growth. The fencing work commenced at around 6 a.m. on Saturday.
The programme was attended by retired Deputy Director of the Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation Ksh. Nabakishwar, Headmaster of Kakching Makha High School Naorem Robi, President of Friendship Sporting Club and solo tree planter Pukhrambam Inaosana, along with local residents.
As a gesture of appreciation, a “Yes-SHE” promotional T-shirt was presented to a school cook who participated in the tree plantation drive.
