Jiribam, Mar 1:
A significant sit-in protest took place in Jiribam today, calling for the urgent formation of a government in Manipur amidst a backdrop of rising tensions and public discontent. The demonstration was organized by the Jiribam branch of the Committee on the Protection of Indigenous Peoples (COCOMI) in front of the Congress Bhavan.
Protesters wielded placards with powerful messages, demanding an end to the arrest of village volunteers, the swift establishment of a people’s government, the resumption of peace in Jiribam, and the removal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) of 1958 from the region.
Y. Chandrasakhi, an Executive Member, Women Wing of COCOMI’s Jiribam branch, addressed the crowd, voicing her concerns regarding the prevailing political situation in Manipur. She criticized the imposition of President’s Rule in the state, describing it as unsatisfactory, especially in light of the presence of a “double engine government” — a term often used to refer to a state government that is aligned with the central government of the same political party.
Chandrasakhi emphasized the urgency for a people’s government, stating, “The formation of a government that truly represents the will of the people is essential for restoring stability and peace in Manipur.” She highlighted the detrimental effects of President’s Rule, which she argued has led to increased unrest and dissatisfaction among the populace.
Furthermore, she strongly condemned the ongoing arrests of village volunteers, advocating for their immediate release and calling for the government to respect the contributions of these individuals to the community. Her remarks resonated deeply with the protesters, many of whom have ties to these volunteers and view their arrests as an unjust action against local governance and community support.
