The Meira Paibi of Sawombung Thongkhong staged a sit-in protest today condemning the firing by unidentified persons at the residential gate of a teacher in the area.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 7 pm on September 19 at the residence of Sagolsem Shyam, a teacher at Biramangol College, Sawombung, under Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East district.
The protest was held at the Thongkhong Keithel shed. Speaking during the protest, Wahengbam Khambiton, Secretary of the Sawombung Thongkhong Meira Paibi, condemned the firing and said such incidents create fear among peace-loving residents and vulnerable sections of society.
She appealed to all concerned not to repeat such acts and said that any grievance or dissatisfaction regarding the teacher’s work or conduct should be addressed through dialogue and discussion.
Khambiton said the locality had remained peaceful, but the firing had created such fear among residents that many were now hesitant to venture outside their homes.
Protesters held placards carrying messages including “We want peace”, “We condemn creating fear by firing guns at homes” and “Resolve all problems through dialogue.”
