Imphal, March 13:
Based on specific intelligence inputs, a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was conducted at Kangchup Hill under Lamsang Police Station, Imphal West District, on March 12 at around 3:30 AM. The operation was carried out by a joint team comprising Sector QAT, Range QAT, 189 QAT, 69 Bn, 109 Bn, 169 Bn, 34 Bn QAT, 86 Bn, 143 Bn QAT, SHO Lamsang, and Manipur Commando Teams, Imphal West.
Upon reaching the location, security personnel observed several unidentified individuals attempting to flee. Despite being ordered to stop, they continued running and fired one to two rounds at the security forces. The team responded in self-defence, but the suspects managed to escape, taking advantage of the hilly terrain and dense vegetation.
A thorough search of the area led to the recovery of a significant cache of arms and ammunition. The recovered items included seven INSAS rifles, two SLR rifles, one .303 rifle, one gas gun, and a 9mm pistol. Security personnel also recovered two high-explosive grenades, three wireless sets, and multiple magazines, including those for INSAS LMG, INSAS, .303, 9mm, and .32 calibres. Additionally, various ammunition calibres were found, including .303, 5.56mm, 9mm, and a 7.65mm misfired round.
The discovery of these weapons and ammunition suggests potential militant activity in the area. Authorities have launched an investigation to identify the individuals involved and determine their affiliations.
