Senior citizens to monitor malpractice in electoral politics

Imphal, August 2: Senior Citizens For Society, Manipur has come up with the idea of creating large scale awareness among the people of the state about the need for conducting a free and fair election. 
In a press meet held today at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul, Imphal General Secretary of the Society Prof L Sadananda said that the society will start monitoring the malpractice in electoral politics in the upcoming state assembly election scheduled in 2017..
He said that due to the lack of effective governance or non performing government, the people of Manipur have faced countless number of problems in the state. All these countless numbers of problems could have been avoided if malpractice in electoral politics in prevented, therefore, senior citizens for society, Manipur strongly feel the need for organising a massive campaign to make people understand about to elect qualified representatives, he added.
L Sadananda Singh also said that too much corruption in politics and too much dirt in our electoral systems is the root of mis-governance. Buying or selling of votes during election have been an open secret, yet none have not spoken any words against such kind of wrong doing as the culture of silence have been adapted as a result of our indifferences but now it is the duty of our well-meaning citizens to act in a positive direction, he added.
L Sadananda Singh further said that in order to establish a good and effective government in Manipur, we the people of the state have to choose a responsible and dutiful representatives from amongst ourselves and for this purpose initiation of a vigorous campaign for a free and fair election for the forthcoming Election of Manipur which will be held in the year 2017.
To take up the necessary steps, a monitoring group/joint action committee for free and fair election of Manipur will monitor the electoral process and will also fight the illegal activities of any of the candidates contesting in the election, he added.
Khaidem Mani, Secretary of Senior Citizens for Society, Manipur said that Senior Citizens for the Society has convene a meeting on coming August 21, 2016 at 1pm in order to achieve the aims and objectives for the monitoring committee/joint action committee on free and fair election, Manipur 2017. A meeting of the civil society organisations, NGOs, Students’ Unions, Women’s Organisations, Meira Paibies and Clubs etc, was also held on July 23, 2016 and the same will be invited by the Senior Citizens for the Society for the said meeting to be held on August 21, he added.
