The Sekmai Protection Committee volunteers seized a truck loaded with sand from the Imphal River for violating the restriction on quarrying and transportation of sand from the river bed of Sekmai area. According to Kh Rajesh, president of Sekmai Protection Committee, the violation was detected during a regular checking of Imphal River site today conducted jointly by volunteers of Sekmai Protection Committee and Advance Women Society, Sekmai after restriction was imposed on quarrying and ferrying of sand from the river bed since June 1, 2013. The truck bearing registration number MN-06T 0242 with fully loaded sand was driven by Chanambam Ibocha from Iram Siphai and the truck belongs to Deven Warapam of Leimapokpam. The driver revealed that he is unaware of the restriction over the ferrying of sand and stone from Sekmai area along Imphal River. Kh Rajesh further disclosed that the Committee had already submitted a written application to the DC and SP Imphal West district to take some initiative for imposing the order of Forest department for restricting on sand and stone quarrying from the Rivers site, but unfortunately no action has been taken up till now, raising the number of such incidents in the area. He also appealed through the media for the government to look into the matter.
