Over the past several months, a deeply troubling situation has unfolded in the state. Hundreds of empathetic students have rallied in support of their peers who faced physical aggression at the hands of both central and state security forces. These students had taken to the streets, raising their voices and demanding justice for two students, HijamLinthoigambi and PhijamHemanjit. Tragically, these two young individuals were abducted and later murdered by Kuki militants. This heart-wrenching incident has magnified the persistent law and order challenges in the state, which the government has been struggling to manage for the past five months. The instability has escalated to such a degree that the Chief Minister of Manipur has faced restrictions in accessing some areas of the state, most notably the Churachandpur district.
Following this distressing series of events, a significant and heartwarming show of unity emerged from the student community. Approximately 3,000 students from several schools and institutions—including Comet School, Sika Higher Secondary School, Brilliance School, Xtra Edge School, St Stephen Higher Secondary School, Imprint Science Academy, Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School, ACI (Advanced Coaching Institute), Kindergarten Montessori School, Human Resource Development Academy (HRD), and Competitive Success Academy—came together in an unprecedented act of solidarity. Pooling their resources, they managed to consolidate contributions made within their individual schools, culminating in a substantial sum of Rs 1,55,750. This entire amount was then distributed among those students who had been most severely injured, ensuring that the spirit of camaraderie and support remained at the forefront during these challenging times.
On the 16 and 20 of October, the amount was handed over the students victims, including KishanLoitongbam of Yairipok, who had a critical injury with 40 pellets in his arm. Rs 1,00,000 was given to him to help him treat his injury. Jotin Wahengbam of LilongArapti, with lower severity of blunt trauma in his liver, was given an amount of Rs 35,750. IrirajSougrakpam of Uripok Achom Leikai, with a critical injury to his leg, was given an amount of Rs 10,000. With a low severity, Thokchom Lemenson of Phoubakchou Awang Leikai got injured from pellets on his chest and leg and was given an amount of Rs 10,000.
Expressing why they contributed the amount to help their fellow students, the group of students said: “We are a community of students from eleven different schools, namely, Comet School, Sika Higher Secondary School, Brilliance School, Xtra Edge School, St Stephen Higher Secondary School, Imprint Science Academy, Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School, ACI (Advanced Coaching Institute), Kindergarten Montessori school, Human Resource Development Academy (HRD) and Competitive Success Academy who have come together in unity.
“We are so grateful to everyone who came forward without affiliation or persuasion to help the injured students. All the contributions and campaigns were done to help our fellow injured students. It is to be obliged to all the concerns that this community will be dissolved as soon as the crisis ends,” the students added.
