Residents of Sangaiyumpham Part I Mamang Leikai and Mairenkhun, falling under Khangabok and Wangjing Tentha Assembly Constituencies in Thoubal district, are facing severe hardships due to an artificial flood, prompting calls for urgent intervention by the concerned authorities.
Hibjur Rahman @ Angou, Zilla Parishad Member of Sangaiyumpham, drew the attention of government officials to the problem and urged them to take up a permanent solution at the earliest.
He stated that for the past four to five years, heavy rainfall has repeatedly led to flooding of houses, roads, and nearly 150 pari of paddy fields in the Mamangpat area, leaving villagers in distress. He explained that water from Wangjing, Samaram, and Tekcham streams flows into the locality, and although it is supposed to drain through a canal at Tentha Khunjao into the Wangjing River, blockages in the canal prevent proper discharge. As a result, floodwater stagnates, causing widespread damage.
Rahman noted that farmers are unable to cultivate their fields, with standing crops in over 150 pari destroyed year after year. Families are forced to live with waterlogged houses and submerged roads. While villagers themselves have attempted to drain out the water, he cautioned that such temporary measures cannot resolve the recurring crisis.
He appealed once again for authorities to provide a permanent solution so that the affected villagers are spared from enduring this yearly hardship. Residents expressed frustration that despite repeated representations, no effective action has been taken so far.
