A bank heist occurred at Punjab National Bank, Viewland Ukhrul yesterday.
A group of 10 masked gunmen struck at approximately 5:30 pm on Thursday, making off with a staggering amount of approximately 18.85 crores from the bank which is also the Ukhrul treasury chest designated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as informed by bank staff.
The perpetrators, clad in black masks and camouflage shirts, were reported to have been speaking an unknown language. The audacious act unfolded as the criminals tied the bank staff at gunpoint.
The bank, which closes its doors at 4 pm, fell prey to the armed assailants who seized the opportunity during a vulnerable moment. The staff informed us that there were originally seven security guards on the premises; however, at the time of the incident, only one was on duty, with the others occupied with their meals.
Exploiting the situation, the armed gang entered through the bank’s back door, overpowering the lone security personnel on duty. It’s noteworthy that the Bank Manager was on leave during the incident.
Residents in the surroundings reported witnessing two suspicious campers parked behind the Punjab National Bank (PNB) building.
Local law enforcement has launched an immediate investigation into the incident. The Ukhrul police are working closely with relevant authorities to gather information and track down the culprits.
No official statement has been given by the bank so far but it was informed that an FIR had been lodged at Ukhrul police station.
Security measures in and around financial institutions in the area are heightened in response to this attack.
Till the time of filling this report, no one was arrested and no group or organisation has claimed responsibility.
Sources from Ukhrul police informed that the district police has taken swift measure to nap the culprits and a 24X 7 security alert was sounded by establishing Mobile vehicle check post in all the exit and entry point of the district and around Ukhrul district in coordination with Assam Rifles.
It is also reported that in the aftermath of the looting incident at PNB in view land Ukhrul the additional SP Ukhrul was given the task of Interrogation Officer( IO) .in the operation . Moreover, IGP zone -3, Nishitu  Chawal, and DIG range – 4 Worngam Ningshen are stationed at Ukhrul at present.
