Rongmei Naga Council (RNC) Manipur demanded the state government of Nagaland to grant voting rights to all the Rongmei citizens of Nagaland. This was stated by the President, RNC, Thuankubui Pamei in a press release dated today. Pamei added that the state government of Nagaland has granted the status of indigenous tribe to Rongmeis living in Nagaland, however many of the tribes have been divided into groups; indigenous and non indigenous groups. The non indigenous groups do not have the voting rights to the state (Nagaland.) Pamei further stated that Rongmeis being a scheduled tribe in the list of scheduled tribes of the Indian constitution the Rongmeis of Nagaland should also be included in the scheduled tribe list of Nagaland.Pamei further said the settlement of Rongmeis in Nagaland is traced back to 1920s under the British period. He added that many of the Nagas of Nagaland shared the ancestry of Makhel of Manipur and many of them originated from Manipur. Nagas are of one blood, one ancestry with one common homeland and territory. Nagaland broadly means the country inhabited by the Nagas, added Pamei.
