Role of cluster models and FPCs in empowering organic farming in Manipur

Imphal, Feb 20:

In order to boost organic farming and supporting local farmers, Rajiv Kangabam, leading the Manipur Technology Innovation (MTI) Hub, highlighted the importance of using a cluster model facilitated by Farmers Producer Companies (FPCs). Speaking at the opening of the Nongpok Apunba FPC Limited’s office and workshed in Nongpok Kakching Village, Imphal East, Rajiv explained how this approach could significantly increase both productivity and income for farmers.
He stressed the government’s increased focus on the cluster model, noting its higher success rate compared to individual schemes for organic farmers. Rajiv also pointed out that activities supported by FPCs would not only introduce scientific methods for better production and packaging but also create extensive marketing opportunities, potentially including exports abroad with backing from the Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA).
Rajiv further explained that FPCs represent collective efforts to promote sustainable farming practices and build a community committed to organic agriculture principles. He highlighted their role in creating job opportunities for locals and contributing to the state’s economy.
The inaugural event included a technical session on effective planting techniques for organic crops, as well as discussions on packaging and marketing strategies. Presiding over the program were MOMA’s project officer Donald Soubam, former head of Nongren Chingningkok GP M Bilashini, and social worker Huirem Bimol.
The newly opened FPC is expected to benefit over 400 farmers in Imphal East by providing them with necessary scientific equipment and tools for organic farming practices.
