The Rongmei Naga Council Manipur (RNCM) has called for an immediate halt to what it termed as illegal road construction, referred to as the “German Tiger (Terror Road),” between Kangchup and Jaojangtek village. The Council also demanded that no Suspension of Operations (SoO) camp of Kuki militants be set up along the stretch, asserting that the area falls within the traditional territories of the Rongmei, Inpui and Liangmai tribes under the Joint Tribes Council.
The RNCM further urged the removal of poppy plantations along the same route and expressed concern over alleged attempts to settle immigrants in the region. It stated that representations regarding these issues had already been submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs through the Governor of Manipur and to other concerned authorities.
In this connection, the Council submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Manipur, Yumnam Khemchand, on February 17, raising several demands related to infrastructure development, administrative reorganisation and security concerns affecting the Rongmei Naga community.
In the memorandum, the RNCM congratulated the Chief Minister on assuming office and urged him to address the issues with urgency in the larger public interest.
Among its major demands, the Council sought early completion of the Imphal–Kangchup–Tamenglong (IKT) road project funded by the Asian Development Bank, stating that the project is crucial for the socio-economic development of the region.
It informed that earlier representations on the matter had been submitted to the Governor of Manipur on December 18, 2025, followed by a reminder through the Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong and another representation to the Chief Secretary during his visit to Tamenglong headquarters for the 18th State Level Orange Festival 2025 on December 19, 2025.
The RNCM also requested the State Government to consider the demand of more than 40 Rongmei, Chothe, Aimol and Chiru villages under Saitu–Flinglep constituencies of Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts for their merger with Noney district, stating that such a move would address long-standing socio-economic and political grievances of the affected communities.
Additionally, the Council pressed for early implementation of the approved Tamenglong–Peren road construction project via Longdi Papram, covering a stretch of 100 kilometres. It stated that a representation along with relevant approval documents had been submitted to the Governor of Manipur through the Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong on January 14, 2026.
Expressing confidence in the Chief Minister’s leadership, the RNCM stated that it looks forward to a secure and prosperous future for the Rongmei Naga community in the state.
