Rise in crimes against women and children alarms Churachandpur residents

IT News
CCpur, April 6:

Crimes against women and children are raising alarm bells in Churachandpur district, with fresh incidents highlighting growing concerns over the safety of vulnerable groups, particularly in relief camps. On April 4, a 10-year-old girl was reportedly raped, just weeks after a 9-year-old girl was found dead under suspicious circumstances at a local relief camp.
Police sources said the latest victim, currently residing in Churachandpur, was admitted to the district hospital after the assault. Personnel from the Manipur Police, including officials from the Women Police Station, quickly reached the hospital and launched an inquiry. While the accused has reportedly been arrested, authorities have not yet disclosed his identity.
This incident comes amid heightened concern following the reported abduction of another minor from a relief camp, further exposing the vulnerability of displaced children living in temporary shelters.
Though official statistics on crimes specifically targeting women, children, and the elderly in Churachandpur’s relief camps since May 3, 2023, are not publicly available, several incidents have been reported over the past year. On March 20, 2025, a 9-year-old girl was found dead in a relief camp, with family members alleging signs of sexual assault. Earlier, on March 20, 2024, four children between the ages of 4 and 9 drowned in the Tuitha River near a camp. On September 22, 2023, a one-year-old girl succumbed to pneumonia while staying at a relief facility.
As of September 2023, over 58,000 people — including more than 22,000 children and 300 elderly persons — were reported to be residing in 351 relief camps across Manipur. The conditions in these camps continue to raise serious concerns regarding the safety and health of their inhabitants.
In response to the April 4 incident, the Zomi Mothers Association (ZMA) condemned the attack, stating that society is no longer safe for women and children. They demanded the harshest punishment for the accused and warned that leniency could spark public outrage and unrest.
The Zo Women’s group also expressed strong disapproval, calling for swift and exemplary legal action. They urged authorities to strengthen protection mechanisms for minors, especially girls.
Investigations into both the April 4 assault and the March 20 case are ongoing. Authorities have yet to release further information.
