RIMS performs first aorto-biliac bypass surgery

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal has reported that it has successfully performed a complex aorto-biliac bypass surgery for a large bilateral common iliac artery aneurysm, marking the first such procedure in Manipur.
According to a statement by Media cell RIMS,, the surgery was conducted on March 15, 2026 on a 79-year-old male patient who had presented with a large bilateral common iliac artery aneurysm with an impending risk of rupture. They stated that the case was further complicated by uncontrolled hypertension and a prior history of stroke, which had resulted in weakness on the right side of the body. The officials added that the patient made a full recovery following the procedure and was discharged last week.
Medical authorities explained that bilateral common iliac artery aneurysms involving both sides are rare and require a high level of surgical expertise due to their complexity. They noted that the successful outcome reflected the advanced clinical capabilities and coordinated multidisciplinary approach at RIMS.
The statement informed that the surgical team was led by Prof. Thokchom Chito, Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, while the cardiac anaesthesia team was headed by Prof. L. Pradipkumar along with Dr. Ningri Sengul. The general surgery team was led by Prof. Laitonjam Chinglensana, and all procedures were carried out under the overall supervision of Dr. Shyamkumar Thingnam.
The institute further stated that it had conducted 13 open heart surgeries during the month, including procedures for atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, Tetralogy of Fallot, double chambered right ventricle, and heart valve replacements.
The team also conveyed its gratitude to the Director and Medical Superintendent of RIMS, stating that their continued support and guidance had played a key role in enabling the successful execution of such complex and high-risk procedures.
