The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal today inaugurated a state-of-the-art Digital Mammography Machine with 3D Tomosynthesis at the Department of Radiodiagnosis, marking a major advancement in breast cancer screening and women’s healthcare in the state.

The facility was inaugurated by RIMS Director Prof. G. Sunilkumar Sharma in the presence of Medical Superintendent Prof. N. Sanjib Singh, Dean (Academics) Prof. L. Rajesh Singh, and Professor and Head of the Department of Radiodiagnosis, Prof. S. Subhaschandra Singh.

Speaking at the inaugural function, Prof. G. Sunilkumar Sharma described the installation of the 3D Digital Mammography Machine as a landmark achievement for the institute and the state. He noted that it is the first such facility in Manipur and only the third in the North East region.

He stated that the advanced imaging system would significantly enhance the early detection of breast cancer, improve patient care, and strengthen medical education and research activities at RIMS. He also announced that mammography services would be made available at an affordable cost of approximately Rs.300.

Prof. Sharma further revealed that RIMS plans to install a Biplane Interventional Radiology System and establish a NIDA Department during the 2026–27 financial year as part of its ongoing efforts to upgrade healthcare infrastructure.

The newly installed Digital Mammography System is equipped with advanced 3D Tomosynthesis technology, which provides highly detailed breast imaging and improves the accuracy of breast cancer detection, particularly in its early stages.
