The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, has celebrated the 10th International Yoga Day at Jubilee Hall today. The event, themed “Yoga for Self and Society,” saw active participation from the faculties, staff, and students of RIMS.
Prof. G. Sunilkumar Sharma, Director of RIMS, Imphal, addressed the gathering, providing a brief history of International Yoga Day. He highlighted the initiative taken by Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, who proposed the idea to the World Health Organization (WHO), leading to its global adoption. Prof. Sharma emphasized the tremendous health benefits of yoga, noting its growing popularity worldwide.
In his speech, Prof. G. Sunilkumar Sharma discussed the numerous advantages of practicing yoga daily. He highlighted how yoga can be customized to suit individual needs and its significant role in reducing stress and promoting overall well-being. Despite the well-known benefits of yoga, Prof. G. Sunilkumar Sharma acknowledged the challenge of dedicating time to it amidst daily activities. He urged everyone to integrate yoga into their lives, emphasizing its importance for both personal and societal well-being.
He also stressed the need to spread awareness about yoga’s benefits among family and friends, suggesting that regular monthly yoga sessions could be more beneficial than annual celebrations.
The event featured a comprehensive yoga session led by a qualified instructor. Participants were introduced to various asanas, including Yogasanas, Kapalbhati, Pranayama, Dhyna, Sankalpa, and Meditation. The instructor provided insights into the essence of yogic exercises and their impact on health, followed by a practical demonstration to help participants acclimate to the exercises.
The celebration was also attended by R.K. Mecolt Singh, Deputy Director (Administration), RIMS, Imphal; Prof. Brogen Singh Akoijam, Dean of Academics, RIMS, Imphal; and Prof. Th. Meera, Sub-Dean, RIMS, Imphal.
