Resumption of Imphal-Guwahati bus services will provide relief to people: Chief Minister

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh today said the resumption of public transport services between Imphal and Guwahati would provide much-needed relief to people, particularly students studying outside the State and those travelling for medical treatment.

The Chief Minister was speaking at the inauguration of strengthening works at Wabagai Higher Secondary School in Kakching district under the Samagra Shiksha Manipur.

Taking note of the high airfare between Imphal and Guwahati, Khemchand Singh said the resumption of road transport services would ease the difficulties faced by the people. He said public transport services had resumed from yesterday as part of the Government’s continued efforts to restore peace and normalcy.

Referring to the crisis that began in May 2023, the Chief Minister said it had caused immense hardship to people across the State, particularly daily-wage earners.

10 vehicles, more than 200 passengers ply NH2 on second day

The resumption of public transport along the Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati route via NH2 continued smoothly on its second day, with more than 200 passengers left Imphal in a fleet of 4 buses and 6 Winger vehicles today.

The vehicles departed from the ISBT at Khuman Lampak at around 10 am this morning. In a related development, the 125 passengers who had embarked on the inaugural journey yesterday have safely reached Guwahati earlier today.

Mentioned may be made that the resumption of transport service along NH2 comes after Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen and Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen jointly announced the reopening of National Highways for free movement of all communities and the resumption of Imphal–Dimapur-Guwahati bus service on 8th August, 2026 at Kangpokpi district.

Recalling his visit to the school in May 2023 after visiting Sugnu, he said the institution had witnessed significant improvement and positive changes since then.

Khemchand Singh further said road strengthening works in the Wabagai Assembly Constituency had been completed within six months at an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore. A proposal for further road strengthening works worth around Rs 10 crore had also been received and would be considered, he added.

Wabagai MLA Dr Usham Deben Singh said development in the constituency had been affected by the prolonged crisis. He announced that construction of a bridge under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) would be completed soon under the guidance of the Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister also inspected the newly constructed facilities at the school, including Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratories and separate toilets for boys and girls, which are expected to provide students with improved learning facilities.

The programme was attended by Kakching Deputy Commissioner Angeline Renita R., Chief Engineer (Education-S) Y. Bhouchou Singh, teachers, students and others.
