Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba urges for inclusion of Manipuri Language in Indian currency

Rajya Sabha MP from Manipur Leishemba Sanajaoba has drawn the attention of the Rajya Sabha for the inclusion of the Manipuri Language in the original Meitei Mayek Script to the Indian currency note.

Speaking during zero hours of the last day of the ongoing budget session, MP Sanajaoba said that Manipuri Language has been included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian constitution on August 20, 1992 along with Konkani and Nepali Language.

While Konkani Language and Nepali Language has already been included in the Indian currency note Manipuri Language is still yet to be included due to certain controversies over its script.

Drawing the attention of the house, Sanajaoba said that Manipuri Language today is being taught upto Master Degree first Semester in Manipur in its original Manipuri script (Meitei Mayek).

“I , therefore, request the government through this august house to include Manipur Language in Manipuri Script on our currency notes, which is the wish and long cherished dream of our Manipuri People and Hon’ble CM of Manipur N. Biren Singh.
