Questions raised over alleged irregularities in MNCA cricket selection process

Questions have been raised over the alleged violation of established norms in the selection process for the Ranji Trophy, C.K. Nayudu Trophy and Vinoo Mankad Trophy teams for the BCCI Domestic Season 2026–27.

The allegations were raised by Manipur Cricket Lovers spokesperson Thokchom Bikramjit Singh at a press conference held at Khuyathong today.

According to Bikramjit, the three persons considered by the Manipur Cricket Association (MNCA) Selection Committee and Management for appointment as selectors—Yumnam Sharat, Chingambam Bonny and Nahakpam Amuba—were selected allegedly without following the established norms and procedures of the association.

He claimed that, under the norms followed by the MNCA, selectors should be players who have represented the BCCI senior team and should have retired from playing for at least five years.

Bikramjit questioned the appointment of Sharat, Bonny and Amuba, claiming that Sharat and Amuba had never represented the BCCI Manipur Senior Team, while Bonny had retired from playing only three years ago.

He further alleged that the selection of players for the 2026–27 domestic season reflected the consequences of what he described as the deviation from established selection norms.

He questioned the omission of Sultan Karim (Elite), who was ranked third, had played 10 matches, taken 24 wickets and scored 203 runs, in favour of Rohit Soubam (Super Plate), who was ranked 17th, had played seven matches and taken 12 wickets.

The selection of Rohit Soubam has also come under scrutiny, with Bikramjit alleging that Soubam plays for PCC, a team associated with MNCA secretary Geet Lairenjam. He said the alleged association had raised questions over the fairness of the selection process.

The Cricket Lovers also expressed concern that similar issues could affect selections in the Under-19 and Under-23 categories, potentially discouraging aspiring cricketers if deserving players are overlooked.
