A public rally highlighting the historic role of Maharaj Gambhir Singh and the significance of Manipur’s resistance against Burmese occupation was organised at Langthabal, marking 192 years of the landmark struggle led by the Maharaj.
The rally, jointly organised by Thawai Mirel Manipur, Peace Committee Manipur, Meitei Langol and Salailel Iputhou Pakhangba Thougal Lup, commenced from Iputhou Pakhangba Shanglen at Langthabal Kunja Awang Leikai and culminated at Langthabal Khubam in Canchipur. Participants offered floral tributes at three memorial sites along the route, paying homage to Maharaj Gambhir Singh and other historic figures associated with Manipur’s fight for survival and sovereignty.
Addressing the gathering, UNLF ex Chairman RK Meghen, also known as Sanayaima, recalled the resistance of 1826 led by Maharaj Gambhir Singh against the Burmese, or Awa, occupation, which followed the devastation of the Seven Years period. He said the courage and leadership displayed during that struggle remained a defining chapter in Manipur’s history.
RK Meghen stated that while the present generation may not fully match the stature of historic leaders such as Maharaj Gambhir Singh, Meidingu Nara Singh and Sana Herachandra, their legacy can still be honoured through collective resolve and action. He observed that mass participation in such rallies creates a strong emotional connection and helps the people, particularly the younger generation, better understand their history.
He further urged the people of Manipur to remain united and to collectively confront the challenges facing the state, drawing inspiration from the spirit of unity and sacrifice demonstrated during the historic resistance.
