Public Prosecutors of the Government of Manipur were irked by a viral facebook video which contains conversation between the Executive Editor Aribam Dhananjoy Sharma @ Paojel Chaoba and the JAC Convenor Merajao Kamei Executive Editor of web portal Frontier Manipur in connection a sexual assault case of a minor girl of Chini-Inkhon under Women Police Station Bishnupur.
A press statement jointly signed by Public Prosecutor M.Bishambhor Singh, Public Prosecutor (D) A. Nilachandra Singh, Addl. Public Prosecutor (D) A. Gopendro Sharma, Addl. Public Prosecutor (D) P. Dhanakumar Singh, Addl. Public Prosecutor (D) T. Bipinchandra, Addl. Public Prosecutor (D) Unison Duidang, Addl. Public Prosecutor (D) Aribam Ashok Sharma, Spl. Public Prosecutor Danny, Spl. Public Prosecutor, M. Raichand, Spl. Public Prosecutor and A. Neelakumar, Spl. Public Prosecutor urged the State Machinery and the Law Enforcing Authority to take immediate steps, while warning the JAC Convenor Merajao Kamei and the Executive Editor of Frontier Manipur to clarify their statements at the earliest or else the Prosecutors would be compelled to take further course of action.
The Prosecutors further decry that the statement is a clear case of character assassination who tried to tarnish her image and even more stunned and alarmed ploy being executed by a group of communal mindset persons.
“The JAC Convenor and the Journalist have no right to comment on a case which has not even started trial and they are not authorized to do media trial. The Prosecutors have viewed it very seriously. Granting of bail is the discretion of the Court and the Public Prosecutor has nothing to do with it. If aggrieved, they could have requested the Spl. Public Prosecutor to pray for filing application for cancellation of the bail”, the statement said.
The statement further added that speaking about the Spl. Public Prosecutor with regard to the Lhukhosei Zou case which was disposed last year on 21st December, 2020 was uncalled for when the matter of the Press statement was with regard to a POCSO Case. The Judgment and Order was pronounced by the Judge and not by the Public Prosecutor. The Spl. Public Prosecutor had done her duty by putting up before the Public Prosecutor for sending up for Appeal as it was a fit case for appeal by giving six grounds of Appeal. The media post and the statement made by the Executive Editor against the Special Public Prosecutor had created doubt in the minds of the common people and it had affected the sentiments of the whole Prosecution and giving a defamatory statement against a Prosecutor is defaming the whole Prosecution and the Criminal Justice system.
