Public pays final respect to former MP/MLA BD Behring

People gathered in large numbers to pay their last respects to the late BD Behring, who had served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from 41/Chandel (ST) Assembly Constituency and also as a Member of the Rajya Sabha. His mortal remains were brought back to his native place at Chakpikarong in Chandel District, where a final condolence service was held.
BD Behring passed away on June 27 at Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi. After his demise, his body was brought to his residence at Minuthong, Imphal. From there, it was taken to Chakpikarong, his birthplace, where the final rites and condolence programs were conducted.
Many people gathered to pay homage to the late BD Behring at various locations across Chandel District. A significant condolence event was organized at Japhou Bazar, the district headquarters of Chandel, jointly by the Chandel Naga People’s Organisation (CNPO) and Anal Naga Tangpi (ANTA/Anal Naga Union). Representatives from CNPO, Naga Students’ Union Chandel, local units of various organizations, women’s groups, and others attended the program and offered floral tributes.
Another condolence gathering was held in Khambathel Village in the Western Valley area of Chandel District. A major program was also held at the Chakpikarong Public Ground, where various Naga community-based organizations offered their condolences and observed a mass prayer after the body was brought there.
BD Behring was born on February 18, 1951, in Thorcham Village, located in the Chakpikarong Subdivision of Chandel District. He completed his MA in political science from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi. Throughout his life, he remained active in numerous organizations advocating for the welfare of the people.
He entered politics in 1990 and was elected as the MLA from 41/Chandel (ST) Assembly Constituency as a Janata Dal candidate during the 5th Manipur Legislative Assembly election. He also served as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha in the same year. Later, in the 2002 Manipur Assembly election, he was re-elected as an MLA from the same constituency on a BJP ticket. He also served as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS).
Even before being elected as MP/MLA, BD Behring was known for his dedication to the people and the Naga community through his political and social service. It is reported that in 2005, he was honored with the “Best Citizen of India” award for his public service.
