Imphal, Sept 4:
In the wake of recent attacks on Meitei villages in the Imphal West and Imphal East districts, widespread protests have emerged across Manipur, criticizing the state machinery for its failure to protect residents. Last evening, large groups of women, armed with torches, took to the streets in Imphal East and Bishnupur districts, demanding the removal of central paramilitary forces, the incumbent Chief Minister, Security Advisor, and the Director General of Police (DGP).
This morning, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Lup and AMAWABA organized a protest at Khoyathong, calling for immediate action to safeguard the people. The women’s organizations have warned of a potential escalation to a third Nupi Lal (Women’s War) and a revival of the 2nd June Uprising if the violence continues and both central and state governments fail to take decisive action.
Thangjam Apabi, General Secretary of Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi, expressed frustration with the current administration, stating, “If the attacks persist and the central and state governments do not act to end the violence and protect our people, we are prepared for a third Nupi Lal and potentially a resurgence of the 2nd June Uprising.”
Apabi criticized the state government for its perceived inaction and urged it to take a more assertive stance, including appealing to the central government to counteract the violence. She also expressed concern over the use of drones in attacks, comparing the situation to wartime conditions between nations.
