Protest staged demanding preservation of Koirengei Airfield

A large number of people staged a protest demonstration today demanding immediate steps to preserve the historic Koirengei Airfield, warning that ongoing permanent construction at the site could erase a vital chapter of history linked to the World War II.
The protest, organised by the Campaign for Protection and Preservation of Koirengei Airfield (CPPKAF), called for an immediate halt to all construction works at the airfield. Demonstrators asserted that the site served as a crucial base for the Allied forces during the decisive battles fought in Manipur in 1944 and therefore must be protected as a heritage landmark.
Speaking to reporters, convenor of CPPKAF, Shanta Nahakpam said the Koirengei Airfield was not only a matter of pride for Manipur but also a site of national importance. He stated that the airfield played a critical role during the war and remains a place where world history unfolded.
He cautioned that once historical sites are damaged, the loss is irreversible. “History cannot be rebuilt once it is destroyed,” he said, urging authorities to intervene before the airfield’s heritage value is permanently compromised.
Nahakpam further informed that the committee has already approached the office of the Narendra Modi and the Rajya Sainik Board, drawing attention to the historical importance of the airfield which was used by Allied forces during the intense fighting in Manipur in 1944.
The protestors demanded that the site be preserved in its original form and developed as a heritage and tourism destination, arguing that protecting the airfield would also honour the legacy of the Indian Armed Forces and the sacrifices made during the war.
They reiterated that all construction activities at the airfield must be halted immediately to safeguard the historic site for future generations.
