Proposed site for National Sports University turns war-field; Automatic gun shot heard as police fired tear gas shell to control mob

Imphal, Oct 8:

The proposed site for Manipur’s dream project National Sports University (NSU) turns a war-field like situation with sounds of automatic gun probably fired by villagers opposing the construction as police fire rounds of tear gas shell who gathered at the place supporting for construction of the NSU.

The site chosen for the construction reportedly belong to three villages and while a group claims the site as Kangpokpi district another group claims it as Imphal West district. On October 5, large number of people resisted demarcation of the land as they claim it as under Kangpokpi district. As the people protesting went hostile, police team resorted to firing tear gas shell at which several people were reportedly injured. Some police personnel were also injured as the protestor strikes back.

Following the incident Kuki Civil bodies has called total bandh from the midnight of October 5 till October 10.

This bandh was opposed by various other civil bodies and even taken resolution for a counter bandh. A meeting was convened yesterday and the civil bodies decided counter blockade against the decision of the Kuki Civil bodies.

Since early morning today large number of people gathered at Senjam Chirang and Haoraothel area in protest against the obstruction of the demarcation of land for construction of the National Sports University.

At around noon police team tried to control the situation from worsening and disperse the gathered local. Tear gas shells were fired and dispersed the gathering mob.

Meanwhile, sounds of automatic gun fired from the other sides were heard, but it could not be certain on from which site the gun shot was fired upon and to whom.
