Shillong, Sept 21:

Today’ conflict and misunderstanding between various ethnic communities of the state is the fallout of the inability to resolve the signing of the controversial merger agreement with India and Manipur on this day of 1949 at Shillong. This was stated by L. Jadumani while speaking during the “One-day open discussion on Merger Agreement, Question of Nationality and Identity of the people of Manipur and Present and Future status of Manipur House, Shillong”, held at Red Land Shillong in Meghalaya.
The one day discussion was organized by the Shillong Manipur Student Union in association with the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), All Assam Manipuri Students Union (AAMSU), Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), and Kangleipak Student’s Union (KSA) to commemorate the signing of the controversial merger agreement between the Maharajah of Manipur Bodhachandra and the representative of the Union of India. Mention may be made that “Shilong Times”, a premiere and one of the oldest English newspapers in the Country reported the agreement as “Annexation”. Its headlines, of the day after the signing of the controversial merger agreement, read as “India Annexed Manipur”.
The present crisis evolving in the state since the merger is the fallout of the controversial agreement and failure to resolve the conflict on time L. Jadumani, an advocate by profession told while speaking as the resource person.
The inaugural session of the discussion programme was attended by Ibohal Kshtrimayum, Former Vice President and Founder member of Shillong Manipuri Students’ Union as Chief Guest while Thokchom Surjit, Advisor of SMSU presided over it.
Besides L. Jadumani, Ningthoujam Munish, Director ICCR also attended as resource person of the occasion.
L. Jadumani also recounted the history of Manipur where the people of Manipur face conflict in different wakes of time but later resolved by the wisdom of the forefather of this erstwhile nation.
Jadumani also said that the might of the Manipur reduces after the 7 years of devastation, but our ancestors make every effort to protect their nation by fighting the war against the British, even after knowing that they would get defeated. The mistake committed was that before resolving the political development before the 1891 war, the force merger of Manipur again create conflict and divide the people till today.
