President of India arrives in Imphal for two-day visit amid tight security

President of India Droupadi Murmu arrived in Imphal this afternoon, beginning a two-day official visit to Manipur at a time of heightened security and political sensitivity in the state. This is her first visit to Manipur since assuming office.
President Murmu landed at Imphal International Airport around 1 pm and was accorded a traditional guard of honour. Senior officials of the Manipur government headed b the Governor of Manipur Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, DPG Rajiv Singh, IPS among others received her before she proceeded to her scheduled engagements.
Immediately after her arrival, the President visited the historic Mapal Kangjeibung to witness a polo exhibition match, highlighting Manipur’s rich cultural and sporting heritage. In the evening, she will attend a civic reception hosted by the state government at the City Convention Centre, where she is slated to lay foundation stones and inaugurate several infrastructure and development projects.
On Friday, the President will pay homage at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex in honour of the courageous Manipuri women who led the two historic agitations against British colonial rule. Her visit coincides with the state’s observance of Nupi Lal Day. Following the ceremony, she will travel to Senapati district to address a public gathering and dedicate additional development initiatives for the hill district.
The President’s itinerary unfolds amid ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur, with certain organisations calling for a total shutdown during her visit. Security agencies have intensified deployments along key routes, and extensive preparations, including road improvements and traffic restrictions, have been put in place.
President Murmu’s visit signifies the Centre’s ongoing engagement with Manipur and its commitment to supporting development, stability, and recognition of the state’s historical and cultural identity.
