Police rains tear gas and rubber bullet as protestors against the construction of National Sports University turn violent at Sora area

At least two girls were reported injured in police action to disperse a group of protestors staging rally against the government plan to establish National Sports University at Yaithibi Loukan at around 11 am today. A large number of protestors including women today staged rally at Sora area in Thoubal district against the establishment of National Sports University at Yaithibi Loukon. The protestors were stopped by a team Thoubal police in front of the police outpost located at Sora as Section 144 of the CrPC has been imposed in and around the area. The protestors confronted the police team for some few minutes and later the police fire several rounds of rubber bullets and tear gas shell to disperse the agitators. The agitators too pelted stones towards the police and the angry agitators finally vandalized a Santro car and set ablaze three motor bikes belonging to the police personnel. Police detained five protest supporters. Meanwhile, additional report said that Officer in charge of Kakching Police Rishikesh along with 3 police personnel has been over powered and detained by the agitators. OC Rishikesh however managed to escaped from the clutch of the agitators along Irnegband side. Sensing the intensity of the crisis, Addl. DGP, LM Khoute, DC Thoubal, MLA Korungthang and IFCD Minister Ngamthang Hao Manipur along with other police top officials rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation.According to a reliable source the agitators were asked to release the 3 police personnel in return to the 5 arrested agitators, however, the agitators said that they didn’t care about them and said that the police personnel will not be released until the government withdraw the decision to establish National Sports University at Yaithibi Loukon.It may be recalled that the state government is planning to acquire 123.29 acres of lands from 44-Yaithibi Khunou area in addition to the 66.07 acres of Khas land before January 5 next year for establishment of the Sports University. However the government proposal received strong opposition from land owners of the Yaithibi Loukon.
