Police lathi charge student protestors

A group of students who were staging rally against the passing of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill organised by All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) under the aegis of North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) were today lathi charged by police and para military troops deployed at Keishampat Junction today afternoon.

According to report reaching here the students first staged a sit-in-protest at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai and later at around noon the students staged a protest rally towards Governor’s Bungalow, with slogans defying any attempt to pass the contentious CAB, to submit memorandum. As the large number of students reached Keishampat Junction, they were stopped by a large number of police team. The students confronted the police team for some time. Later, CRPF personnel deployed at the junction joined the police team and this reporter saw the CRPF and police personnel started beating the students with their baton to disperse them. At least 2 students sustained minor injury in the police action.

A representative of the NESO talking to Imphal Times said that the protest is a part of the NE wide protest initiated by the NESO.

Later, the students gathered again and the police team allowed some of the representative to meet the Governor and submit their memorandum.
