Imphal, Sept 11:
Manipur Police today defended their use of tear gas and stun grenades to disperse student rallies in various districts, including Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, and Thoubal. The police claimed that some protesters began using petrol bombs, firearms, and slingshots with iron balls against the police forces.
Speaking to reporters at the Manipur Police Headquarters this evening, K. Kabib, IGP (Intelligence), stated that the student rallies were largely peaceful at the outset. However, he alleged that certain individuals were intentionally instigating the students to resort to violence.
At least 10 police personnel including a VDF sustained injury after the protestors attack the police using slingshots, petrol bombs etc. The police display some catapults along with iron balls used for shooting towards the police by the agitators.
Kabib expressed concern over the safety of the students, particularly juveniles, who have been staying at Khwairamband Keithel Ima Market. He urged parents and guardians to be vigilant and not allow their children to go out at night.
“The students who were sheltering at Khwairamband before the rally had wanted to return home, but some instigators forced them to remain at the Ima Market,” Kabib alleged, adding that certain vested interests were exploiting the students for their own gain.
“Please do not misuse the students,” the IGP Intelligence appealed to the public and reporters.
