Police arrest 2 illegal bird traders

A team of Mayang Imphal Police under the supervision of SP, Imphal West, RK Jhaljit Singh today arrested two illegal bird traders from Charoibung area of Mayang Imphal along with 4 birds.
Speaking to media persons, M. Rameshwar, SDPO, Mayang Imphal Police Commando said that they got the information of conducting illegal activities of catching wild birds and trading them by some miscreants. Hence a combined team of Police and Commando, under the leadership of district SP, RK Jhaljit Singh had conducted special drives at various places of Charoibung, Khodrak and Komlakhong area since early morning of 03.00 am. While conducting the drive today at Charoibung area, the team caught two men identified as Leitanthem Ibungo Singh (50) son of L. (L) Babuyaima of Mayang Imphal Anilongbi and Khaidem Gunadhor (60) son of Kh. (L) Yaimabi of Mayang Imphal Wangkhei Leikai who were found capturing two live migratory birds called ‘Chongkhu’ by trapping a net and another two dead migratory birds called ‘Khongai’ were also captured. Rameshawr further said that the birds will be handed over to People for Animal, Thoubal. In spite of having the wildlife protection act in the state there are various people who are conducting illegal activities of trading wildlife animals and birds and such drives have become necessary and hence it will be conducted regularly at various places near Loktak lake where such migratory birds inhabit at.
