Imphal, Sept 10:

The People’s Progressive Council, Manipur West lauded the recently signed Memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the government of Manipur and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Ltd. On 31st August 2020 for the construction of 66 MW Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Project at Longjang (Thangal) and Taosang Khunou in Noney District.

The people of the state have been stirred up by the “Go to Hills, Go to village” flagship programmes of the government led by N. Biren Singh being a departure from the Imphal valley centric work programmes. The incumbent government under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister Biren Singh seems so determined to expand the hand of development and hill-valley solidarity with an honest policy.

This Council reminds that the  past successive government had failed to meet the people’s aspiration and even committed human rights abuse by  holding the lands earmarked for the propose for the last  45 years without allowing the local land owners to till the ground as before. This needs a reddressal and the strong will to implement the MoU without fail.

It is also an appeal to the concerned especially the affected local people to maintain a great measure of maturity with the objective to change for the better. No harm should be given which may tantamount to derail the project once again.

This Council is hopeful for the prospect of all round development and welfare providing for the affected local people who deserve equal share of royalty free electricity, job facilities of both skilled and unskilled categories special reservation. Such policy and programmes based on earnest consideration akin to that of the Amazon River project affected local inhabitants in America will reflect the good governance of the present regime. The slogan of “Go to village, Go to Hills” reap the good harvest affecting the excellent governance among the comity of nations across the globe.
