The Patriotic Writers Forum (PAWF), Manipur, today observed the 26th death anniversary of renowned playwright, patriotic writer and social reformer Arambam Somorendra at Nungshikol Park, Chana Khuman, paying floral tributes at his memorial.
The programme highlighted Somorendra’s lasting contributions to Manipuri literature, theatre, cinema and socio-political thought. Professor Chirom Rajketan Singh of the Department of Manipuri, Manipur University, attended as chief guest, while PAWF President Naoroibam Khamba Luwang presided over the function.
As part of the observance, Dr. Naorem Ahanjao Meitei delivered a lecture on “Arambam Somorendra as a Post-Colonial Playwright,” while filmmaker, journalist and author OC Meira spoke on Somorendra’s vision of a united Manipur. A poetry recital dedicated to the late writer was also held, with twenty poets presenting poems in his memory.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Rajketan described Somorendra as a patriot who dedicated his life to the welfare of Manipur. PAWF Secretary Rakesh Naorem highlighted his role in promoting nationalism through literature and noted his contribution to Manipuri cinema through Matamgi Manipur, the state’s first feature film.
Speakers recalled Somorendra’s enduring legacy as a playwright, intellectual and advocate of unity, urging younger generations to preserve and carry forward his ideals.
