Patients visiting the government-run Dental College at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) are reportedly facing severe inconvenience due to the continued non-functioning of the college’s only OPG (Orthopantomogram) X-ray machine. The lack of this crucial diagnostic facility has led to growing dissatisfaction among the public, with many questioning the operational status and effectiveness of the institution.
Once a trusted destination for dental care in the state, the JNIMS Dental College has seen a sharp decline in patient visits, largely attributed to inadequate infrastructure and unresponsive management. According to sources, the OPG machine—essential for panoramic dental imaging—has remained idle for the past five to six months, despite being in working condition.
Observers and patients alike have alleged that the college administration, particularly the principal who hails from outside the state, has shown limited interest in ensuring the installation and proper functioning of essential medical equipment. Concerns have also been raised about the overall supervision of medical services and staff performance.
Patients who previously availed dental X-rays at the college for a nominal fee of Rs. 200 are now compelled to approach private clinics, where the same service costs between Rs. 700 and Rs. 800—posing an added financial burden, especially for economically weaker sections.
Frustration among the public is growing, with many questioning whether the Dental College at JNIMS is functional in any meaningful capacity or merely exists in name. The absence of such a basic diagnostic tool has not only limited access to affordable dental care but also undermined confidence in the public healthcare system.
Despite the presence of the OPG machine, the lack of initiative in getting it operational reflects poorly on institutional accountability. Stakeholders have urged the concerned authorities and JNIMS management to take immediate steps to restore the dental college to full functionality and ensure that essential equipment and services are available to the people of Manipur without delay.
