Pangal (Manipuri Muslim) Political Forum today sought the attention of the state government to recommend to the Union Government to equalize the compensation between the victims of Meitei-Pangal riot and those of Sikh riot.
In a press meet held today at Manipur Press Club, Imphal, M.I. Khan, spokesperson of Pangal Political Forum said that the riot that broke out from May 3, 1993 was caused by rumor. In the riot altogether 140 lives have been killed while 25 people were injured.
The most unfortunate part of the riot was that most of the victims’ families have been deprived from compensation. The then government paid a mere sum of some 20,000 each to some families for the maintenance of the bereaved families.
However, contrary with that, the government of India has given a sum of Rs. 5,00,000 (Five Lakh) each to victims of Sikh riot. This is complete violation of right. The victims of Meitei-Pangal riot should be compensated equally with the victims of Sikh riot.
Ajijulhaq Khan, president of PPF said that the recently the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi expressed that he will pay special attention to North East India. He can prove that he is ready to convert his statement into action by treating the people of North East India with the people of the rest of the country. He also appealed to the state government to recommend the matter to the Union Government. If the state and the Union Government fail to do the needful, the forum will take legal aid in order to get equal compensation.
