Remembering a life devoted to social service and the protection of Manipur’s interests, the Pabung Iboyaima Memorial Trust observed the 10th death anniversary of Thounaojam Iboyaima, fondly known as Pabung Iboyaima, at the AMUCO Public Hall, Kwakeithel.
The observance featured a discussion on the theme “India’s Perspective on Manipur”, bringing together representatives of various civil society organisations to reflect on the state’s prevailing crisis and the challenges confronting its people.
Kh. Gopen Luwang, convenor of the Trust and president of Irabot Foundation Manipur, led the programme alongside Sorokhaibam Sanjoy, president of the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO); Soraisam Memcha, president of Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur; Phunindro Konsam, chairman of the Committee on Human Rights; W. Ibema Chanu, president of AMAWOVA; Thongam Ajit, president of the National Research Centre; Hijam Meghachandra, president of YOFFS; Ibotombi Loitongbam, in-charge president of AMESCO; Hijam Roshan, president of the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF); Arshad Baseimayum, convenor of the Maipak Ningthou Committee; and Sh. Abung Sharma, president of AMACSU, among others.
Addressing the gathering, Gopen Luwang said the annual observance was an opportunity to revisit Pabung Iboyaima’s ideals and reflect on the responsibilities of the present generation towards Manipur. He recalled the social worker’s unwavering commitment to public welfare and the state’s interests, noting that he continued his work despite health challenges.
Urging young people to draw inspiration from his life, Gopen Luwang called for responsible decisions and collective action to protect Manipur’s future.
Speaking on the discussion theme, Gopen Luwang alleged that the Government of India was treating Manipur as a subordinate territory and pursuing policies that threatened the interests and identity of its people. He also alleged that proxy forces were being used to weaken the state, expressing concern over the conflict that has continued for more than three years and its devastating human cost.
Calling for an immediate end to the violence, he urged the Government of India to take concrete measures to restore peace and address the concerns of the people of Manipur.
Gopen Luwang also stressed the importance of unity between the Meitei and Naga communities, calling for greater cooperation to find a lasting solution to the crisis. He cautioned that continued confrontation would only bring further suffering and loss of life, urging all communities to work together to safeguard their lives, dignity and shared future.
