Over 5 kg of opium seized in Jiribam; 2 persons held, alleged supplier arrested in Thanga

In a major crackdown on interstate narcotics trafficking, Jiribam Police seized more than five kilograms of suspected opium from a car bound for Jiribam and arrested two men from Rajasthan before tracing and apprehending the alleged supplier from Bishnupur district.

According to police sources, the operation was carried out at around 8 pm on Monday when a team of Jiribam District Police, led by the Additional Superintendent of Police (L&O) along with the Special Mobile Patrol Unit, intercepted a Honda i20 bearing registration number GJ27BL0847 travelling from Imphal towards Jiribam.

During a thorough search of the vehicle, police recovered 5.145 kg of suspected opium concealed inside the car. The two occupants were immediately taken into custody.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Dhanraj Prajapat (46), son of Kachru Lal, a resident of Sanchai under Pratapgarh district, Rajasthan, and Buddha Ram (44), son of Naina Ram, a resident of Dawal under Jalor district, Rajasthan. Police also seized their mobile phones and cash.

During interrogation, the two allegedly disclosed that the contraband had been supplied by Heishnam Meghachandra, a resident of Thanga in Bishnupur district.

Acting on the information, a joint team of Bishnupur and Jiribam Police conducted a follow-up operation in the early hours today and arrested Meghachandra from his residence at Thanga.

Police sources said the suspect is currently being interrogated at Lamphel Police Station as investigators attempt to unravel the wider network behind the alleged interstate drug trafficking operation.
