The Chandel Forest Division has launched “Operation Thunder” to intensify surveillance and prevent the hunting and killing of wild animals and birds in the district.
The operation was launched today under the supervision of DFO, Chandel, Dr N. Munal Meitei, with Range Forest Officer N. Deepa leading the field teams in coordination with Chandel Police. Surprise checks and searches were conducted at suspected locations where wildlife hunting and poaching are reportedly carried out.
The operation covered around 10 locations in Chandel district. According to Dr Munal, the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau under the Government of India had provided inputs on “Operation Thunder”, aimed at preventing hunting, poaching and related wildlife crimes across the country.
He said no persons involved in illegal hunting or wildlife offences were apprehended during the surprise checks conducted today.
Dr Munal said the operation would continue across different subdivisions of Chandel, including Chakpikarong and Khengjoy, with support from the district police and Assam Rifles. The intensified drive will also form part of Wildlife Week observances scheduled from October 2 to 8.
Appealing to the public to cooperate, Dr Munal said wildlife protection laws alone cannot protect animals unless people actively support conservation efforts. He urged the public to refrain from hunting and poaching, stressing that wildlife forms an integral part of the ecosystem and must be protected collectively.
